Company Overview

Founded in 1991 by Tom Owens, the mission of The Cara Program is to assist the homeless and at-risk populations in their efforts to achieve real and lasting success by providing comprehensive training, permanent job placement and critical support services.

Philosophy

Personal transformation inevitably requires a healthy network of friends and family who can support individuals as they go through the process. And for those who lack positive and productive supporters in their lives, The Cara Program is that support network. It provides comprehensive and personalized services to motivated individuals who are committed to transforming their lives and achieving real, lasting success.

Developing skills to positively approach work and life is the foundation of The Cara Program. The Transformation Seminar anchors the program and runs for twelve weeks and includes critical life skills classes, job training and specialized skills training. The core of the seminar is focused on topics such as self-esteem building, ethics, confliict management, diversity training and daily motivations.

Individuals can only transform their lives and realize their fullest potential when they find a job that pays a living wage and benefits. The Cara Program places participants in quality jobs at one of 80 Cara companies throughout the Chicago area. Each year, approximately
180 participants are placed in permanent jobs at companies such as LaSalle Bank, The University of Chicago Hospitals, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

The comprehensive nature of The Cara Program takes into account the need to support the participants as they transition into the workplace. For at least one year, client support specialists work closely with participants on a wide range of issues including job retention, career advancement and goal setting. Additionally, The Cara Program provides financial literacy training, a matched savings program, housing referrals and rental assistance, homeowner education and support and dental assistance to its employed participants.
