Job Description

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation's leading advocacy organization for children's healthcare, is seeking to fill a support role to operate the AAP simulation lab and manage program operations. This role will provide technical support for simulation-based training, monitor equipment functionality, schedule repair of simulation equipment (software and hardware) and related multimedia peripherals as well as software programming of scenarios. Serve as simulator operator by programming, testing, and running scenarios with instructors; maintain schedule of training sessions and ensure the facility and equipment are set up for teaching sessions, both virtually and in person.

Reporting to the Manager, Simulation Programs, some tasks include:

  1. Coordinate development of training scenarios in collaboration with subject matter experts (SME's), including the development/story-boarding of scripts for virtual/augmented reality and computer-based simulation. Testing and run scenarios with simulation facilitators and role play in simulated scenarios as necessary.
  2. Configure, operate, and maintain networked computer and audiovisual equipment. Support the use of digital media and provide technical support for computer-based multimedia systems and their components.
  3. Communicate with faculty and coordinate receipt and organization of all assigned course materials and media.
  4. Identify and assist in solving compliance issues related to inappropriate product promotion and copyright permission with faculty. Obtain use for permission when necessary.
  5. Program simulator software with clinical scenario parameters. Assess equipment failures and remedy such failures in a timely manner.
  6. Ensure appropriate set up & breakdown/clean up (moulage, staging) of simulation environment, equipment, and supplies.
  7. Conduct inventory and maintain adequate supplies, media, and materials related to simulation and equipment in an organized manner.
  8. Ensure simulation equipment functionality, security, and safety and/or appropriately troubleshoot, remove, dispose, or repair equipment. Interface with the equipment manufacturers regarding equipment operation, troubleshooting and system problems; maintain record of repairs and updates. Recommend replacements or new purchases of simulation related equipment or supplies.
  9. Serve as a simulation operations/technical resource for internal AAP programing as well as external stakeholders.
  10. Assist Instructors by orienting to principles of simulation training technology.
  11. Schedule simulation experiences and coordinate simulation events. Coordinate, schedule, and orient standardized or simulated patients.
  12. Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging quality, safety, and simulation technologies. Create innovative ideas, evaluate new equipment, and identify opportunities for technology improvement and integration into education.
  13. Support the development of and ensure compliance with program policies and procedures.
  14. Support the marketing efforts for simulation program, lab, and the Section on Simulation and Innovative Learning Methods (SoSILM).
  15. Coordinate exhibit booth(s) at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition and other key conferences.
  16. Collect and coordinate data in support of simulation activities.
  17. Maintain data confidentiality and security.
  18. Assist or provide visitor and guided tours.
  19. Provide first line customer support for simulation program, lab, equipment, and simulation scenarios.
  20. Support SoSILM, including taking minutes, data collection and reporting, and developing and disseminating communications and promotions.
  21. Attend seminars, conferences, in-service trainings, and staff meetings as needed.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications needed:

  1. Bachelor's degree with emphasis in biological science, healthcare, healthcare technology or related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required. Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification a plus.
  2. At least two years' related experience in the healthcare field (e.g., respiratory therapist, anesthesia technologist, or paramedic) or in technology/AV operations required, as well as experience managing data. Experience in healthcare simulation preferred, with an understanding of simulation learning, anatomy/physiology, and medical/clinical terminology. Experience using Laerdal simulation products including SimCapture (or B-line) highly desirable.
  3. Excellent customer service, problem solving, organizational, verbal/written communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills required. Strong technical acumen with proficiency in MS Office, knowledge of simulation-based education technology, and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with databases, virtual meeting platforms (e.g., WebEx, Teams), and computer hardware and software applications (e.g., Laerdal Leap software, scenario theme editors) preferred. Must be able to manage multiple priorities within established deadlines, adapt to changing priorities, work both independently and as a team, take initiative, think creatively, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Occasional travel and evening/weekend work required, along with the need for flexibility in arranging work schedule to accommodate physicians' availability.

Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL.
