POSITION SUMMARY

The role of Senior Manager, Automation, North America will be responsible for designing and delivering cost effective, efficient, holistic automation and mechanized technology solutions to current and future clients of DSV, as an in-house automation technical expert. This individual will also be responsible for overseeing the implementation of these technology solutions by working with cross-functional teams including external vendors and integrators in the deployment of approved solution recommendations associated with new and existing client operations. This individual will work closely with the DSV Global Automation Group to implement selected automation technologies. This position is an interdisciplinary field incorporating automation, software functionality, system integration, operations, engineering, and project management.

Ability to travel in the 40% to 65% range

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze, design and deliver innovative automated or mechanized solutions for new and existing clients.
  • Collaborate with Solution Design team in selecting, budgeting, process planning, productivity planning and layout development for automation or mechanized solutions to support competitive RFP proposal responses.
  • Provide oversight and make decisions related to all aspects of the upfit of new technology for sites including possible design of layout or processes, product slotting, capital purchases, MHE, Upfit cost and miscellaneous items.
  • Identify, justify, and recommend automation concepts through ROI analysis that will deliver efficiency to our business while meeting or exceeding financial targets.
  • Coordinate as a North America automation liaison with the DSV's global standardization departments, including processes, WMS, and system integration.
  • Oversee the implementation and project plan of the automation portion of the overall solution as part of the cross-functional implementation team, including automation impacted DSV cross functional departments and vendor management, detail design documentation and approval, automation lead times, mechanical and electrical installation, test planning and testing, training, cut over, go live support, and hand off to operations.
  • Coordinate communications as the liaison between the vendor and DSV team
  • Participate and provide in depth warehouse automation knowledge and know-how during the final detail engineering, specifically surrounding automation such as automation and WMS configuration and functionality, operational and material flow, and system integration.
  • Lead discussions and align cross functional end users with the automation detail design specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and maximize the capabilities of automation within the operation, including strengths, weaknesses, operational parameters, and contingency planning.
  • Ensure Project Scope is documented, followed and as required, change request process is followed and documented in alignment with existing New Business Implementation team processes and toolsets.
  • Oversee vendor management from design, contracting, installation, testing, go-live support, operational handoff, and service contracts.
  • Provide on-site support as needed, such as for installation, system, operational, and contractional testing, punchlist development and resolution management and go live support.
  • Review overall test planning, including other department test phases.
  • Coordinate and participate in the automation portions of the test phases.
  • Develop and execute automation functional and technical test scripts.
  • Coordinate automation training into the training plan, including safety, mechanical, floor and CSR operations, DSV/vendor service support .
  • Align cross functional departments for automation cut over and assist with automation hyper care planning and support.
  • Provide regular updates on projects including early awareness of possible escalation forth coming.

STRATEGIC VENTURE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze and evaluate new advanced automation technologies, robotics, process performance tools, and AI that enhance productivity, efficiency, accuracy, and cost savings across North America DSV operations.
  • Manage the evaluation process, including developing business parameters and vendor selection process.
  • Collaborate with various departments and teams to understand business, markets, and customers need to translate into automation strategy.
  • Develop, update and manage automation project management tools, implementation processes, implementation documentation and tollgate review / approval milestones in alignment with New Business Implementation team.
  • Capture all actional lessons learned as well as any / all other improvement opportunities utilizing a documented initiatives roadmap list of priorities that is maintained and refreshed on an ongoing basis in alignment with existing initiative roadmap structures already in place within the Solution Design, Implementations and WMS departments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct management of team members
  • Conduct performance reviews, mentoring, and manage HR requirements of direct reports.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education & Experience:

  • B.S. in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 7+ years warehouse industry experience, plus 4+ year of automation engineering experience in a warehouse environment or job related/relevant experience.
  • Experience designing automated warehouse solutions, including knowledge of comprehensive warehousing, automation, and informational flow, intelligent automation and cognitive platforms.
  • Strong blend of business, operations, system integration, and technology design and implementation experience with specific focus on building robust automation solutions in support of the supply chain
  • Experience in leading the development of business case justifications to support executive level decision making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience managing the implementation and execution of automations into green and brown field sites.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in understanding programing logic
  • Microsoft Project, Excel, Vizio, AutoCAD LT, Word & PowerPoint, PowerBI

Language Skills:

  • English (reading, writing, verbal)
  • Interpersonal communication and language skills (e.g., listening to others, speaking to others, reading, writing)
  • Communication (facilitation skills and very mature communication skills to be able to communicate to all levels in the organization)
  • Strong executive presence and ability to simplify complex concepts for consumption by non-technical executives. Solid experience in presenting to senior leadership is required to succeed in the role.

Mathematical Skills

Other Skills:

  • E-commerce experience including starting up small to large volume solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience with warehouse management systems
  • Experience in multiple warehouse automation applications (Sortation Systems, AMR, AGV, Voice Technology, Pick to Light, Conveyance design, etc.)
  • Experience in leading and/or working with cross-functional teams from design through the implementation.
  • Experience in integrating automation test planning and execution.
  • Must be able to work in unregulated temperatures within the warehouse during the warmer and colder months can range from mild to moderate.
  • Work overtime as dictated by business whether mandatory or voluntary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • M.S. or Advanced degree in engineering and/or technology
  • Worked within a matrix reporting environment.
  • Implementations experience in 3PL environment; 3+ years.
  • Project management experience; 3+ years
  • Cross functional project management skills for automation implementations
  • Experience in warehouse layout design, optimization, and execution including process improvement.
  • Working knowledge industry best practices and emerging trends in automation
  • Experience with automation integration infrastructure, network, and communications
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in warehouse operations
  • Familiarity with Lean and Six Sigma principles is a plus.
