We are looking for a Microbiologist III in 3600 Eagle Nest Dr, North Building, Crete, IL 60417 USA. Your mission will be to:

The incumbent is responsible for the testing of food samples using various microbiological analyses. The incumbent provides analytical support for the lab by ensuring that laboratory procedures are being performed within specified quality guidelines. This position serves as a technical resource and provides ongoing technical support related to method and process implementations. This position spends the majority of time or all of their time in diagnostics.

  • Prepare, analyze, and perform the microbiological preparation and testing of food samples. Perform confirmation tests on suspect plates or tubes to confirm the presence of pathogens.

  • Read, calculate and record data to produce a report for the client. Correct any discrepancies that occur.

  • Assist in training new technicians in performing various microbiological analyses. Perform method audits under the direction of lab management.

  • Maintain knowledge of current methods and quality systems. Evaluate current methods and recommend modifications as new procedures become available.

  • Educate and train technicians on correct procedures and new analysis methods. Submit changes to SOP's or methods to the Corporate Technical Microbiology group.

  • Assist the Corporate Technical Microbiology Group and lab management in the implementation/evaluation of new Microbiology methods. Assist in submitting changes/updates to existing LIMS codes as well as validation of test codes.

  • Assist lab management in investigating lab issues related to process deviations and failures.

  • Evaluate systems that have potential for errors and work directly with company experts to determine appropriate changes to these processes that will eliminate the potential for error.

  • Assist in the development of training materials to be used in the lab.

  • Maintain sufficient knowledge of Zeta and SMART systems to perform assigned tasks as well as train others in these systems.

  • Understand the proficiency testing process and how results are reported to the lab.

  • Track lab performance and corrective actions on microbiology proficiency programs.

  • Assist with investigation of errors and implementation of corrective actions.

  • Understand laboratory control chart data and DPC protocols to ensure that unsatisfactory data is identified and addressed appropriately. Assist lab management with addressing errors.

YOUR PROFILE

Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years experience, or Masters degree and 1-2 years experience. The incumbent must have an advanced knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain the correct results. Basic chemistry knowledge is needed to prepare the media to the specification of the sample.


Required skills: A basic knowledge of food science is necessary to analyze the microbiological content of a sample. A broad knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities. Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism. Physical dexterity is required to manipulate samples. Laboratory skills obtained as a laboratory technician or similar position are essential to perform the necessary analyses. Oral and written communication skills are necessary to supervise departmental personnel.

Work Environment: The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory. Safety equipment of gloves, laboratory coat and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use the autoclave daily to complete the analysis process. Continuous lifting of analysis materials weighing up to 50 pounds are necessary to transport media materials. The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position. The incumbent should be able to detect slight variation in shades of colors.
