Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for an Environmental Engineer. An Environmental Engineer at Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor is an important member of a small team that works throughout our facility to promote environmental stewardship as well as leading to improve our environmental performance. The facility includes ironmaking, a coke plant, steelmaking, plate mills, hot strip mill, and finishing operations. Ideal candidates enjoy hands-on, collaborative environments and are willing to seize opportunities to develop themselves.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, identify, and implement improvements to facility multi-media (SPCC and Stormwater) environmental programs to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Perform root cause analyses with operating department personnel and environmental staff to identify effective corrective actions for environmental issues.
  • Project management of environmental improvement initiatives
  • Dividing time between office and work in a heavy industrial setting
  • Perform safety audits, hazard assessments, and safety interactions as required.
  • Support plant operations periodically for weekend duty and emergency situations.
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in Environmental Management.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Environmental Fields.
  • Ability to learn State and Federal environmental Laws and regulations.
  • Ability to work self-directed, prioritize work, and handle multiple projects.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.
  • Ability to collaborate in both small and large groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to actively interact with operations, maintenance, instrumentation, and engineering to assist in solving emission control problems including participation in the procurement processes for selecting pollution controls and/or services.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial setting
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Project management and planning experience.
  • Previous experience with water or environmental systems
  • Maintenance engineering experience
  • Process engineering experience
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
