Nalco Water, an Ecolab Company is seeking a highly qualified and creative scientist to join our innovation efforts in the areas of scale deposit and corrosion control as a Principal Chemist within the Water Anchor Research Development and Engineering (RD&E) group at our Naperville Technical Center in Illinois. An individual in this role will be responsible for conducting research, development, andproblem-solvingprojects to enable new and support existing technologies for industrial water treatment applications, such as cooling water treatment. This will require working closely with other RD&E teams, marketing and sales associates, external partners, and customers to design and execute test protocols, both in the laboratory and in the field, and clearly communicate results to stakeholders. What You Will Do:

  • This role will emphasize the development of chemical technologies and their application in industrial water systems.

  • Develop new chemical products, analytical tools, and systems integrating automation, equipment, and digital components to solve customer problems and deliver differentiated value in the area of scale and corrosion prediction and control for industrial water systems, such as cooling water and boiler water.

  • As part of a diverse, global, multidisciplinary and cross-functional team, a researcher in this position will collaborate directly with other scientists, research leaders, marketers, sales teams, and customers to develop, evaluate and deploy technical offerings.

  • New opportunity identification, solution ideation, initial feasibility analysis, process and product development, leading to commercial introduction of new programs and customer solutions.

  • Lead projects and program segments to meet technical and business objectives.

  • Plan and perform relevant experiments and interpret results to develop solutions to complex research problems.

  • Determine optimal solutions from various available options and advocate for proposed technology to internal and external customers.

  • Provide advanced support for technologies within the existing product line and application area, following appropriate training.

  • Appropriately document and communicate all research and support activities using formal/informal reports and presentations at all levels of the organization.

  • Provide consulting/mentoring on experimental design and work direction for junior associates.

  • Provide technical support to assist the sales process. At times, this will require travel at a level up to 15%.

  • Ensure that all research activities are performed with safety as the top priority.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry or related field and R&D experience; a Master's Degree in Chemistry or related field and 3 or more years of R&D experience; a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field and 5 or more years of R&D experience

  • Experience in technical leadership, communications, and management of complex research projects involving multi-functional teams.

  • Experience in the design and development of chemical technologies/formulations based on defined performance metrics.

  • Experience in analytical techniques or chemical product/materials characterization

  • Ability to travel up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Shown aptitude for applying novel solutions to complex problems

  • A strong record of delivering innovative chemical technologies

  • Worked in diverse research environments

  • Understanding of surface/interfacial chemistry

  • Background in advanced materials science research

  • Understanding of fundamental physical/chemical properties and structural activity relationships,influencing corrosion and scale formation as well as inhibition
