Position Summary
The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for the safe operation and instruction of their assigned camp program(s) in accordance with the Camp Policies and Procedures. This position may be supervised by the Camp Director and personnel of the Office of Conference Services & Camps. The Assistant Camp Director will assist the Camp Director with appropriate planning, marketing, implementation and evaluation of their camp's programmatic and logistical operations.
Description of Key Responsibilities
  1. Responsible for assisting the Camp Director in the planning, marketing and execution of the assigned summer camp. This includes assisting with the selection, hiring, training and scheduling of camp staff.
  2. Under the supervision of the Camp Director, responsible for the safety and supervision of all camp participants throughout the assigned camp program to ensure they have a positive camp experience.
  3. In the unforeseen absence or the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director will be responsible for the delivery of a summer camp program consistent with that described in the North Central College Summer Camp brochure.
  4. Assist the Camp Director with the implementation of routines, schedules, and procedures for all camp operations.
  5. Assist the Camp Director in the supervision and evaluation of all program staff.
  6. Provide a safe and secure environment for campers by following and upholding all safety and security rules and procedures. This includes being able to respond to the needs of a participant with disabilities.
  7. Verbally express all camp rules and procedures to campers and parents on the first day of camp. These rules should include the camper's code of conduct, safety and security measures, and any physical guidelines specific to your assigned camp.
  8. Be a positive and appropriate role model to campers and camp assistants in regard to general camp procedures and practices.
  9. Oversee the set-up prior to each camp session and the clean-up at the close of each session, this include maintaining inventory on all camp equipment.
  10. Be a mandated reporter for the "Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act".
  11. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Excellent knowledge of North Central College, the North Central College Camps Program, and the Camps Policies and Procedures (e.g. missions, policies, procedures, budgeting, and emergency protocol).
  2. Capability to plan, promote, execute and evaluate camp services for the North Central College Camps Program.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with parents of camp participants and respond to concerns and complaints and escalate when appropriate.
  4. Ability to supervise camp staff and camp participants.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Camp Director, the Office of Conference Services & Camps and additional North Central College offices.
  6. Strong knowledge of the subject matter being demonstrated or taught.
  7. Proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality service to both internal and external constituents of the College.
  8. Ability to verbally communicate camp rules and procedures to campers and parents at the start of each camp.
  9. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College.
  10. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

Distinguishing Characteristics
North Central College camps are unique entities to the College with the complexity and sensitivity of working mainly with minors and individuals from outside of the College community. Understanding this sensitivity and complexity, it is imperative that all policies and procedures governed by the College are followed accurately. While doing so, the Assistant Camp Director is expected to serve as an appropriate role model for the children in their care, as the individual in this role will be a representative of the College during the course of their assigned camp. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential, as the Assistant Camp Director must be able to relate effectively to people from a variety of backgrounds. This person is an integral member of a small staff operating in an environment where cooperation, teamwork and collaboration with Conference Services & Camps and various departments within the College are vital to its success. Non-compliance with policies and procedures, as outlined in the Camp Policies and Procedures Manual, may result in the loss of coverage under the College's insurance.
Education/Training
CPR/AED Certified. High School diploma required
Experience
2-3 years of relevant subject or camp experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
