Job Summary:

The Tax Intern, Tax Automation & Innovation, as a member of the Tax Automation & Innovation team, applies their educational background and experience in order to collaborate with clients of the firm and team members to implement tax automation tools.

The Tax Intern, Tax Automation & Innovation is responsible for collaborating with TaxAI staff and management to assess client tax departments end-to-end and assist in executing on the client's needs for automation across tax data, process, technology, and workforce. Client engagements may include optimization or implementation of existing client tools, custom BDO tax/data solutions or 3rd party vendor solutions. The Tax Intern, Tax Automation & Innovation is charged with participating in engagements under the direction of TaxAI staff, management and leadership including exposure to design, build, test and deployment of solutions as well as assisting in developing training and documentation during the final client hand-off stage. Duties often include participating in ongoing maintenance and consulting as well as providing support to clients' post-implementation, such as on-site or virtual "go-live" or close assistance within new systems. Other responsibilities may include collaborating with multiple other offices within the firm to assist other business line engagement teams in delivering tax solutions to their clients as well as supporting the firm through development of new internal tax solutions or consulting and training on existing internal tax processes, technologies, and applications.

Job Duties:

  • Tax Consulting
    • Seeks to learn the full picture of an external client or internal teams' business and assists in executing on the development of unique strategies aligned with business objectives
    • May participate in internal and external planning or project delivery meetings, that may include solutions workshops or training
    • Seeks to learn work plans for tax consulting projects performed for one's clients
    • May be involved in gathering client requirements, drafting client requests lists, reviewing client data and workpapers and redesigning such workpapers and processes as instructed by staff and management
    • Seeks opportunities to understand the process of drafting clear and compelling enhancements to tax process, technology, and data challenges.
    • Seeks to learn how to establish and contribute to internal standards and processes for the practice
    • Seeks to understand complex technical items and communicate them to target audience so that relevant issues are clearly understood
    • Seeks to learn how to to architect solutions that address all facets of developing new business capabilities a) Strategy, b) Organization/ People, c) Processes/Controls, d) Technology/Enabling Tools
  • Engagement/Project Management
    • Demonstrates basic project and process management skills; can effectively manage responsibilities associated with one or more large scale, complex projects as directed by TaxAI leadership
    • Gains exposure to establishing methodology and determining the appropriate work plan for a given client or internal team working with TaxAI leadership
    • Gains exposure to ownership of risk mitigation and quality assurance, with support from leadership
    • Develops understanding of proper scoping and works with Tax Performance Engineering team as appropriate to ensure client engagement terms are followed
    • Executes standard project setup procedures, tracking and gains exposure to billing and basic project economic management, including delivery of individually assigned project tasks on time and within budget
    • Clearly and proactively communicates progress on projects with engagement leaders
  • Client Service
    • Gains exposure in identifying internal teams' and client expectations at the beginning of a project or engagement
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program, required
  • Major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or Technology, required

Experience:

  • Leadership experience, preferred

License/Certifications:

  • Desire to obtain CPA certification, Attorney, Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA"), Alteryx, RPA, or other Analytics software certification (or the equivalent of one of these designations), preferred
