UIC is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer to join our Technology Solutions team. The Cybersecurity Engineer will be an IT community leader and partner responsible for the technical support and guidance for the information security suite of services. They will play a vital role within our university security operations team, ensuring the integrity and security of the university's information assets. This position involves advising and providing hands-on support for auditing, implementing, and maintaining security controls, and participating in technical security assessments. The engineer will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to enhance our cybersecurity posture while staying current with industry trends and emerging threats.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide internal guidance for leveraging advanced features of our suite of security tools including event logging, vulnerability management, threat hunting and certificate management.
  • Provide technical support to campus IT liaisons so that they can take full advantage of our suite of security tools. This includes researching solutions and providing hands-on support.
  • Participate in technical security assessments of university IT infrastructure and third-party services or products.
  • Create, review, improve, and maintain technical knowledge base articles for security services.
  • Provide Tier 2 SOC support.
  • Remain abreast of cybersecurity news, industry trends, and best practices, offering informed recommendations for improvements and optimizations aligned with the organization's goals.
  • Function as technical lead for incident response investigations.
  • Manage day-to-day office operations. Interview, hire, orient, lead, mentor and evaluate staff to meet departmental and organizational needs.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or closely related field of study.
  2. Minimum of 6 years of professional IT experience which includes 2 years' experience at a supervisory or lead worker capacity
  3. Demonstrated experience within IS Security which includes experience in assessing, monitoring and maintaining, and evaluating information security policies and systems, including hardware, firmware and software.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years of experience in IT Security
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices
  • General knowledge of Networking, Windows Server, Linux, and Cloud
  • Strong understanding of IT administration and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Effective communication (verbal and written) and collaboration skills
