Job Summary

Sam Schwartz is currently seeking a full-time Transportation Planner to join a dynamic team within the Division of Project Development at the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). The successful candidate will work alongside City employees to advance a variety of priorities and planning efforts and contribute to a wide variety of activities to support projects including project management; community engagement; stakeholder coordination; technical analysis; and development of maps, reports, presentations, and graphics.

The successful candidate must be self-sufficient, organized, and have the ability to communicate concepts clearly and concisely through writing and graphical representation. The candidate will report to the offices of the City of Chicago Department of Transportation with an optional hybrid work model. Evening and/or weekend hours may be required to support public engagement events.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The selected individual will perform a variety of tasks related to transportation planning projects and studies and associated needs, including but not necessarily limited to:

  • Planning-level transportation analyses
  • Project management
  • Preparation of supportive meeting materials and follow-up documentation
  • Preparation of memoranda summarizing agency direction
  • Internal coordination
  • External stakeholder coordination
  • Administrative coordination and support
  • Attendance at public engagement events
  • Meeting facilitation and participation
  • Creating spreadsheet-based models
  • Preparing high-quality graphics
  • Writing technical reports
  • Site visits for observation, assessment, and data collection
  • Developing presentation materials

Skills and Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop high-quality graphics to support communications materials
  • Command of transportation and urban planning concepts
  • Command of technical analysis skills needed to support transportation decision-making
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficiency in GIS and analysis add-ons, such as Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst
  • Experience managing transportation planning projects

Requirements

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Master's degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or equivalent degree preferred,
  • 5-7 years of experience, and
  • Authorized to work in the US.
